Financial Assistance For Defensible Space
Hayward Fire Department’s Residential Assistance Program is to help the residents of the Fairview Fire District create defensible space around their home to help slow down the spread of wildfire. We are offering this program to low-income homeowners, seniors, and disabled residents. The program will prioritize assisting seniors and disabled property owners who meet the income requirements. Applicants must provide verifiable documentation of eligibility for all criteria they meet. The program is not for tree or trash removal. Whether any services are ultimately provided will be at the sole discretion of the Hayward Fire Department. This program is funded by various grant programs. The Fairview Fire Protection District may also provide grants to support this program as the Annual Budget allows.
What is “Defensible Space”?
Defensible space refers to a buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surrounds it. This space helps slow the spread of wildfire and increases the safety of firefighters defending your home. Under CA state law (CA PRC Code 4291) you are required to have a one-hundred-foot zone of defensible space around your home.
